The Mississippi Public Service Commission – Pipeline Safety Division is certified through Agreement 60105 with the United States Department of Transportation - Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) as having adopted the minimum federal regulations pursuant to the Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968. The Mississippi Public Service Commission - Pipeline Safety Division is responsible for safety compliance inspections and enforcing state and federal pipeline safety regulations for intrastate natural gas pipeline facilities. The mission of the Pipeline Safety Division is to protect the public and environment from the accidental release of natural gas with a compliance program that promotes educational standards for the industry and contributes to the health and security of Mississippi.
The Pipeline Safety Division conducts various safety inspections (including but not limited to operator qualification, operation, maintenance, construction, accident investigations and drug and alcohol inspections) of intrastate natural gas private distribution systems, municipal gas distribution systems, master meter gas systems, transmission systems and jurisdictional gathering lines operating in Mississippi to ensure compliance with Pipeline Safety Regulations. These inspections help reduce the risks associated with the transportation of natural gas by pipeline.
The Pipeline Safety Division also promotes damage prevention to underground facilities.
